Heads Up
He who testifies to these things says, “Surely I am coming quickly.” Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus!
Revelation 22:20
In 1942, American General Douglas MacArthur left the Philippines. Later in reference to that, he made a now famous speech in Australia in which he included the line, ‘I shall return.’ In 1945, he kept that promise, and returned. This was an earthly man, a mere mortal, who kept his word. How much moreso will Christ keep these words of our text today, ‘Surely I am coming quickly.’ To be certain it has been some two thousand years since He uttered them. Cavilling objectors have derided Him saying, ‘Where is the promise of his coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.’ God has an answer for that sneering remark. He counters, ‘But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up.’ The short answer is this. To the Eternal God, two thousand years is a blink of an eye. Hence, when Christ says, ‘Surely, I come quickly,’ it is on His terms, not ours. Therefore, here is where we should land in our thinking. Christ is coming, and He has not said exactly when. It is time to get ready. If you are, as yet out of Christ, repent and believe the Gospel. If you are Christ’s, you have time at the minute to make ready for His soon return. What you will do to glorify Him, you have time to do today. For as surely as all else He has promised has come to pass, so also shall this, ‘Surely I come quickly.’
Our Glorious Living Christ,
we rejoice in the promise of Your Word.
We look forward unto the day,
when You shall return, with Power and Great Glory,
and we shall see You face to face.
