‘Known…In Adversities’
‘Known…In Adversities’
I will be glad and rejoice in Your mercy, for You have considered my trouble; You have known my soul in adversities.
Psalm 31:7
David was no stranger to adversity. If we read his biography, we find numerous occasions when he might have written such a psalm as we have before us. Various students of Scripture have conjectured as to the occasion of the psalm, but it is frankly hard to be certain. What we can know is that the psalm reflects a time of great crisis in David’s life. When David was encountering the hardest and most soul-destroying circumstances of his life, what was his consolation? Our text declares it: ‘You have known my soul in adversities.’ David’s consolation is our consolation, if we put it in Christological terms, it is of great comfort to us that Christ, ‘knows our soul in adversity.’ In our own experience, we will doubtless face adversities of various types. They may arise from friends, family, work, or some other arena of life. When we find these circumstances overwhelming, where will we look for consolation, for understanding, and for security? We look to the Christ, Who, rather than abandoning us in our time of trouble, ‘knows our soul in adversities.’ Today, Child of Grace, whatever your adversity, let this be your comfort, your consolation, and your blessed assurance. Christ knows your soul in adversities. He will never leave you or forsake you.
Our most Gracious and Compassionate Savior,
we praise You, that You shine as the Great Light in our darkest hours.
We rejoice that You know us,
even when we feel that no one else cares for our soul.
