The ‘Anchor Of The Soul’
The ‘Anchor Of The Soul’
This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast….
Hebrews 6:19
What anchors us? We lived in what may be a very tumultuous world in which many unsettling things often occur. There are certainly many times when we may feel like a ship, tossed up and down with all sorts of influences over which we have no direct control. What keeps us anchored? The writer of Hebrews has referred to ‘two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie. In the previous context, the writer has made much of God’s Word to Abraham. In the passage that follows our text, He makes much of the Person and Priestly Work of Christ. These ‘bookends,’ which bracket our text, lead us to the conclusion that the ‘hope’ which we have as ‘an anchor of the soul,’ is the written Word of God, and the Living Word of God. Our ‘hope’ lies in the fact that God has not lied to us. Our ‘hope’ also lies in the fact that Christ has done all that is necessary to fulfill the written Word of God regarding our redemption. This anchors our soul in all the storms of life. Our ‘hope’ is in the written Word of God, which leads us to Christ, the Living Word. With this ‘hope’ as our ‘anchor of the soul,’ we can not only survive, but actually thrive, even in the midst of the greatest upheavals of a stormy life experience. God’s Word, both written and living, are very sure.
‘We have an anchor that keeps the soul,
steadfast and sure while the billows roll;
fastened to the rock which cannot move,
grounded, firm and deep, in the Savior’s love.’
Our Almighty and Unchanging God,
We praise You, that You have grounded us upon Christ.
All our Hope is in Your Word, both written and living.
We rejoice that these shall never fail.
