To ‘Bear Witness To The Truth’

Pilate therefore said to Him, “Are You a king then?” Jesus answered, “You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.”

John 18:37

Christ ‘bears witness to the truth.’ When Christ stood before Pilate, Pilate asked the question, ‘Are You a king then?’ Christ responded with the answer which serves as our text for today. At the heart of this verse are these words upon which we want to concentrate. Christ said that He came into the world to ‘bear witness to the truth.’ In essence, what Christ is saying is, ‘I am here to bear witness to…Myself.’ Christ is ‘the Way, the Truth, and the Life.’ For Him to ‘bear witness to the truth,’ is for Him to speak the truth about Himself. Why is this important to us?  It is important when we come to consider the Plan, to which we referred a few days ago, which Christ set forth to His disciples in Acts 1:8 when He said, ‘you shall be witnesses to Me….’ Christ is the Message of His people. Religion is not the Message. The denominational organization is not the Message. The church’s program is not the Message. Our particular doctrinal position is not the Message. Our personal ‘separateness ’ is not the Message. Christ is the Message. All else that flows forth as a logical consequence must, of necessity, tie back to this one ‘witness to the truth,’ and that is Christ. If we are to faithfully follow Christ, we must go where He goes with this. We have a veritable plethora of subject matter in this One Person, and in this opportunity, to ‘bear witness to the Truth.’

Great God of Truth,
we rejoice that You have given unto us Christ, Who is our Message.
We praise You that in every age, we His people,
have the high privilege and glorious opportunity to make Him known.
