‘And Begged Him’
‘And Begged Him’
And behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue. And he fell down at Jesus’ feet and begged Him to come to his house….
Luke 8:41
Christ responds to intercessory prayer. We find before us the second instance of Christ raising someone from the dead. In a little while we will come to a discussion of the actual miracle. For the moment, we want to dwell upon some of the events that preceded Christ’s raising the daughter of Jairus from the dead. As parents we are very concerned about the welfare of our children. They are, in many respects, the nearest and dearest of our relations. We want them to be well in every way. To that end we daily beseige the Throne of Grace for them. We become especially fervent when things go wrong with them. In the text before us today, Jairus has sought out Christ to intercede for his dying daughter. Our text tells us, ‘he fell down at Jesus’ feet and begged Him to come to his house.’ We behold the compassion of Christ. Christ responds to the intercessory prayer of this anxious father for his darling, dying daughter. We find ourselves in a similar position to Jairus with regard to some of our own near and dear relations. They are, apparently, well on their way to a Christless eternity. We long to see Christ save them by Free and Sovereign grace. We pray for them fervently. We fall at the feet of Christ and beg Him to intervene. Christ responds to intercessory prayer according to His Will as it fits into His Providential Plan and Purpose. Today, let us come to Him with holy confidence in His Character and His Compassion.
Our Gracious and Loving Christ,
We rejoice that You do Wonderful things for our
nearest and dearest relations.
We praise You that You respond to our prayers for them
and will do them good for Your Own Sake.
