‘Behold, Your King’
‘Behold, Your King’
“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.“
Zechariah 9:9
Christ is the Once and Future King. Throughout the Old Testament, ‘To Him give all the prophets witness.’ All we see played out in the Gospels, we can read beforehand in the prophecies of the Ancients. By Christ’s Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem, He was fulfilling the prophecy of Zechariah, which serves as our text for today. For the moment, let us simply dwell upon the fact that Christ is The King. The prophet declares , ‘Behold, your King.’ Christ is the King Who ranks above all other kings. Human kings vaunt themselves. They lift themselves up, and surround themselves with the best of what is available to impress others as to their importance. In very short order they die, and their glory fades into the mists of history. Christ’s Kingship has preceded all those kings. His Kingship is inherently more Glorious than all of theirs. His Person is more excellent. The Greatness of His Kingship will far outstrip theirs in its’ longevity. This King is our King. Before Him, ‘every knee’ shall bow…and ‘every tongue’ shall confess ‘that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.’ Before we dwell upon any other aspect of this text, we want to pause and consider, the Person about Whom Zechariah wrote. Here is a Subject worthy of our time and attention. Here is a worthy, contemplation: ‘Behold, your King.’
Our Sovereign, Righteous God,
we rejoice that Christ is King.
We praise You that He shall reign, forever and ever,
and that we shall reign with Him.
