‘Lowly and Riding on a Donkey’

“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.“

Zechariah 9:9

We want to pause a few moments and gaze upon the King, Who causes us to rejoice by His very humble arrival. Although we speak of this as the Triumphal Entry of Christ, we see clearly that the manner of His arrival is not after the manner of other kings. Instead of riding upon a white stallion, with flowing royal robes upon His back, and a royal diadem upon His Head, Christ arrives, as our text describes, ‘lowly and riding on a donkey.’ This is True Greatness robed in utter humility. Christ presents in a completely different manner than we would customarily expect to see a king present himself. This presentation of Himself is all to a purpose. Christ’s purpose in coming in humility was to accomplish redemption. Without that, He would not have been able to do all that He intended through His Passion and Death. Having said that, this is the last time we will see Him in this way. When Christ returns, it will no longer be in the Role of ‘gentle Jesus, meek and mild.’ According to John in Revelation 19, when Christ arrives again, this is how He appears:  ‘Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war.’ When Christ arrives again, He will come as ‘King of Kings and Lord of Lords.’ Again, this is cause for us to rejoice. We have rejoiced in Christ as the Humble King and Lowly Savior. We rejoice also in the Christ Who is King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Christ’s arrival is always cause for rejoicing.

Our Kind and Humble Savior,
we rejoice that You have come unto us, in a meek and lowly manner.
We look forward to the day, when You shall arrive in all Your Glory,
King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
