A Daily Dependence

A Daily Dependence

A Daily Dependence

Give us this day our daily bread.

Matthew 6:11

Our dependence upon God for His provision is a daily dependence. As Christ is teaching us to pray, He brings us to the petition, ‘Give us this day our daily bread.’ We considered yesterday how this implies a humble dependence upon God. We are abjects at the Throne of Grace. Along with that, Christ adds the idea that our dependence upon God is both frequent and regular. We ask that He, ‘Give us this day, our daily bread.’ This harmonizes very sweetly with all that Christ has said before about our relationship with God the Father. A child of the house does not fear to come to the father frequently and regularly. The child has no inhibition whatsoever. We have such a relationship with God because we are His children by adoption. He expects that we are going to come to Him every day asking Him for daily provisions. ‘Our daily bread’ covers a much larger area than just the physical ‘bread’ to which the phrase refers. We depend upon God for the daily provision of spiritual, mental, physical, and social ‘bread.’ We have daily needs in all these areas and He is infinitely capable of supplying all those needs. Christ is teaching us, first, to recognize that it is a daily dependence and, second, to bring it to God daily as a child would to a loving father. Today, let us approach Our Father with the petition, ‘Give us this day our daily bread.’

Our Good and Kind Father,
we rejoice that You are open-handed with Your bountiful provision.
We praise You that every day, we can appeal to You
for fresh bread from the ovens of heaven.
