‘Your Kingdom’
‘Your Kingdom’
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
Matthew 6:10
Christ would have us know the Divine Order of all things. We only truly know our own role, if we clearly understand it in relation to the role of others. Primarily we need to understand the role which God occupies. As Christ is teaching us to pray, He comes to the phrase, ‘Your kingdom come.’ Before we come to consider the implication of the phrase itself in the larger sense, let us dwell upon the Kingship of God. If we are to pray, ‘Your Kingdom come,’ we must first arrive at the conclusion that God is King. What follows from that, is the fact that Christ, the Second Person of the Trinity, is also King. The Scripture makes this connection when the voices in heaven say, ‘…The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.‘ If we recognize God as King, we must also recognize Christ as King. The Scripture, from Genesis to Revelation, presents Him as the King. Jacob prophesied of His Kingship on his death bed. David prophesied of His Kingship in the Psalms. Isaiah saw Him sitting upon His Throne. Mary understood that He would sit upon the throne of His father David, and that His Kingdom will last forever. When we pray, ‘Your Kingdom come,’ we are testifying clearly that we recognize that God is King. We are affirming that we believe it, and that we desire it. Because we know God, and understand Him, as He has revealed Himself, we rejoice that He is the King and that His decisions are always good and right. Today, let us appeal to our King, ‘Your Kingdom come.’
High King of Heaven,
we rejoice that You rule over all.
We praise You, that You have made us
kings and priests unto You,
And that we shall reign with You.
