‘Jesus Spoke These Words’

These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee.

John 17:1

As we considered this text yesterday, we dwelt upon the context within which Christ spoke these words. Today, we want to consider the contents of what He had to say. With the largest strokes of the brush, we can display the areas He covers. He begins by emphasizing God His Father, His relationship with Him, and the larger redemptive purpose of them both. He goes on to pray about the accomplishment of that redemptive purpose as it respects His elect. He spends a great deal of time discussing the work which He has done to fulfill His Father’s will for those whom the Father has given Him. He goes on to pray for those people and to express His heartfelt desires for them. He makes reference to how God will fulfill those desires in the lives of those people. He projects forward to the time when all the ransomed people of God will be saved to sin no more. Here is such an intercessor Who is greater than we could imagine. Here is One Who not only has greater desires for us than we have for ourselves, but also has the means at His disposal of bringing all of those desires to pass. We are delighted with such an intercessor and with such high and holy purposes. Today, let us dwell upon all that Christ intends for us.

Our Gracious, Kind and Loving Savior,
we rejoice that you bear our names before the Throne of God.
We praise You that You will avail in prayer,
and that all that You have desired for us,
You will bring to pass.
