‘All Spiritual Blessings’

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ.

Ephesians 1:3

We want to be aware of the foundation upon which the commands of the Scripture rest.  For the past few days, we have been considering the armor of the Christ-believer.  This lies within the portion of Ephesians which sets forth the practical ramifications of the theological groundwork which the Apostle Paul has laid in the beginning of the book.  We should connect the end with the beginning.  To divorce the two, will result in a ‘follow the list’ mentality, which is devoid of any real incorporation of the Person and Work of Christ, apart from mere lip service.  The armor of which Ephesians 6 speaks comes to us by way of all that we find Paul expounding in the ‘theological’ portion of Ephesians.  When he speaks of the ‘spiritual blessings,’ of what is he speaking?  He is speaking of our election, our predestination, our redemption, our conversion to faith in Christ, and our indwelling by the Holy Spirit.  These ‘spiritual blessings’ are the foundation of all that follows.  Christ’s Person and Work are integral to all these ‘spiritual blessings.’  Therefore, every practical result with regard to all that God commands we must, of necessity, associate with what we are in Christ.  Christ is at the heart of our theology which means that He is at the heart of our practical applications of the commands of Scripture from beginning to end.  Christ is all.

Our Wise and Sovereign God,
we rejoice that You know all the things
of which we stand most in need.
We praise You that in Christ,
You have given unto us, all spiritual blessings.
