‘The Mystery Of His Will’

‘The Mystery Of His Will’

Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself.

Ephesians 1:9

The will of God is often a mystery to us.  The vast gulf between our finite understanding and the infinite mind of the limitless God means that much of what He brings to pass is far beyond our ability to comprehend.  He does reveal His will to us in particular matters and enables us, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to come to some understanding of those things.  So, He reveals to us, within the context of what it means to be, ‘in Christ’ that which Paul terms, ‘the mystery of His will.’  A few verses beyond where we are today, Paul declares what the ‘mystery’ is.  He says that the will of God is, ‘that in the dispensation of the fullness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him.’  This is ‘the mystery of His will.’  This is what He has ‘made known to us.’  It is a ‘mystery’ to us for more than one reason.  It is a mystery to us because of the vast gulf between our mind and God’s as we considered earlier.  It is also a mystery to us because we cannot fathom why the Holy, Righteous, and Infinite God would redeem us at such a cost to Himself as the humiliation and bloody death of His Only Begotten Son.  This is a thing at which we must continually marvel.  We are grateful for it, and for the Christ Who practically effects it, but it astounds and amazes us, defying our ability to comprehend it.  Today, let us meditate upon this ‘mystery of His will,’ and rejoice in where it has brought us.

Our All-knowing, and All-wise God,
we rejoice that Your will is ever for our good.

We praise You that You will enable us,
by the power of the Holy Spirit,
to understand all things that are for our good
regarding Your will for us, in due course of time.
