‘One Hope’

There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling….
Ephesians 4:4
Christ, and the knowledge of Him gives us hope that is more than a mere wishful desire or expectation. As humans, we often speak of hope as a wishful desire or expectation about which there is always some degree of uncertainty. We can never be absolutely certain whether our hopes will come to be, or meet with disappointment. Christ never disappoints. The hope we have in Him is that certain expectation that all He has promised shall infallibly come to pass. When Paul speaks of the ‘one hope of your calling’ in the portion of the verse which serves as our text for today, he builds upon the foundation he has already laid. It is the one Spirit Who has applied unto us the redemption purchased by Christ. It is the Holy Spirit Who has called us with that effectual calling which we were able to hear as the result of the regeneration He granted to us. That calling has given us hope in Christ. Therefore, the more we see of Christ, and the more we know of Him, the more our hope increases. We have the certain expectation that all He has promised He will infallibly perform. This respects everything that has to do with every aspect of justification, adoption, sanctification, and glorification. We have hope in Christ in every way.
Great God of Wonder and of Hope,
we rejoice that You have done all things well.
We praise You that You will bring to pass
all that You have promised,
and that because of that,
we have eternal hope.
