Calling Upon The Lord

Calling Upon The Lord

I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the Lord.

Psalm 116:13

Responding to the grace of God involves more than one thing.  We spoke yesterday of taking the cup of salvation.  This is something which we begin and continue.  We respond to grace by embracing Christ as the Gospel freely offers Him to us.  That is the initial occasion when we ‘taste and see that the Lord is good.’  It is, in a de facto way, the first time that we call upon the name of the Lord.  As our text describes, we take the cup of salvation.  To continue to use the illustration, we may drink from the cup initially which begins our relationship with God through Christ, but we then go on to continue drinking.  Our justification and adoption are acts of God’s free grace, done once and never repeated.  Our sanctification is a work of God’s free grace which is ongoing.  He has brought us to take the first drink from the cup of salvation.  He continues to enable us to call upon the name of the Lord.  What began as an initial encounter, continues as a relationship with Christ from day to day.  Christ who gives us ‘living water’ satisfies our thirst in a way that no one else can.  Today, and every day, let us call upon the name of the Lord.

Our Gracious Master and Our God,
we rejoice that You have begun in us
this great work of grace.
We praise You, that day by day,
we continue to have the opportunity
to call upon the Name of the Lord.
