Unsearchable Riches

Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ.

Ephesians 3:8

What does ‘the unsearchable riches of Christ’ mean?  These are not terms we use in ordinary conversation, so they require some definition.  What are riches that are unsearchable?  Various  translators of this verse have used terms like incalculable; infinite; immeasurable; unfathomable; exhaustless; boundless; and endless.  Here is the place where words fail to do more than to touch the hem of Christ’s garments.  All the writers who have ever written; all the preachers who have ever preached; and all the teachers who have ever taught, have only scratched the surface of what are the unsearchable riches of Christ.  These riches stretch backwards to the eternity in which the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit held communion with one another before the world.  They become clear to us by degrees in the revelation of Christ through the Scriptures.  We see the indications of these unsearchable riches in the words and works of Christ during His earthly sojourn.  We behold the future manifestations of these riches in the broad brushstrokes of the Apostle John in his description of the eternal state.  As the Holy Spirit gives us sight, we begin to apprehend a portion of the vastness of the unsearchable riches of Christ.

Our Glorious Living Christ,
we rejoice that You are our Great Treasure.
We praise You that by our being in You,
 we are rich indeed.
