Why We Need Christ

Why We Need Christ

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked:
who can know it?

Jeremiah 17:9

It is hard for us to be honest with ourselves.  Overall, we want to think we are better than we are.  Jeremiah is uttering a sober truth with which we have to come to grips.  ‘The heart’ is who we are.  ‘As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.’  Because of the deep depravity, which exists within the very core of every one of us, we often think what we would never say and contemplate what we would not actually do.  It is important that we understand the actual evil of which we are genuinely capable.  This brings us to the understanding of why we need Christ.  The work of Christ affects our hearts.  The transformation, which He effects in the heart of every person He saves by free grace, is the only effective cure for the deceitfulness of the human heart.  All attempts at reform or personal reinvention, will fail here.  Christ alone can change the heart.  Education, devotion, self-discipline, or any other personal program will fall short of dealing successfully with the deceitfulness of the heart.  Therefore, we fly to Christ.  He is as good as His word to have the most profound effect upon the deceitful heart, which lies within us all.  This is why we need Christ.

O God, of grace and truth,
we rejoice that You have revealed unto us our true nature.
We praise You that You have
pointed us to Christ in Your Word,
to save us from ourselves.
