Into All Truth

Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come.

John 16:13

If we are going to understand God, we must understand Christ.  If we are to understand Christ, we must understand truth, because He is, according to His Own statement, the Truth.  How will we understand truth unless someone guides us into it?  Who can guide us into that truth other than God Himself?  Christ refers to this in our text.  He says that the Holy Spirit, Who is ‘the Spirit of truth,’ ‘will guide you into all truth.’  Christ is addressing the disciples, but the implications extend far beyond those few people.  The Holy Spirit continued to guide them and others into all truth.  In a sense, as long as the Holy Spirit is sanctifying the members of the Body of Christ, He is guiding all of us into all truth by degrees.  Because He is, He is inevitably leading us to Christ.  He awakened us from death to life, and brought us to Christ for salvation.  He continues to point us to Christ to sanctify us.  He conforms us to the Image of Christ in order that we may be like Him, which is the end result of that sanctification.  Thus, the Holy Spirit is the Chief Executive Officer of redemption.  He guides us into all truth.

Our Good and Gracious God,
we rejoice that You have sent to us
Your blessed Holy Spirit.
We praise You that He guides us into all truth,
in every way, and thus bring us to Christ.
