The Spirit Of Christ

But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you.  Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

Romans 8:9

The Spirit of Christ is the Holy Spirit of God.  He is the Third Person of the Trinity, the same in substance, equal in power and glory with the other Two.  Therefore, as Paul is discussing the work of the Spirit in this chapter, he lays down some characteristics of those who have the Spirit.  In our text, Paul makes the statement, ‘if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not his.’  This is a broad statement with wide-sweeping implications.  Of necessity, it must extend to every portion of the Body of Christ.  The logical conclusion of this is that what is true of the saints now must also be true of the saints in every age.  All those whom God has saved by free and Sovereign Grace are saints.  Therefore, they are all members of the Body of Christ and all have the Spirit of Christ.  We include in this Body, all of the saints of Old Testament as well as those of the New Testament era.  Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, David, and Isaiah all had the Spirit of Christ.  Believers before them and after us have the Spirit of Christ as well.  There is no schism in the Body of Christ so far as having the Holy Spirit is concerned.  Because we collectively and individually have the His Spirit, we are His, and are members of one another.

Our Great and Wise God,
we rejoice that the Body of Christ is one.
We praise You that as one Body,
we have Your Holy Spirit.
