One God

One Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

Ephesians 4:5,6

One God unites us.  As Paul is expounding the unity of believers, he arrives at the climax of all the notes he has been assembling in concert.  We see that there has been a logical progression.  He began with the Body, that which is most earthly and easily observed.  He went on to the Spirit who does the spiritual work of effectually calling us to the one Lord, Who is the Author and Finisher of our faith.  It is into this Body of Christ that the Holy Spirit has baptized us in order that we may glorify God.  We believe in this one God as the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.  Within the context of Paul’s writing, he has mentioned each of them in turn, but the Father is the One Who is over all, even though the Members of the Trinity are essentially, ‘the same in substance, equal in power and glory.’  While this matter of the Trinity is a mystery in many ways, it does not violate the concept that there is one God.  Our emphasis is upon Christ because He is the One Mediator between God and man. In order to be full-fledged in our theology, we must give the Father and the Spirit that which they are due.  Therefore, we declare with Paul, that there is ‘one God.’  He has pointed us to Christ by His Spirit, which ultimately brings Him the glory. 

Our Glorious Living God,
we rejoice that You are Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
We praise You that You have shown Yourself unto us
in these three persons, that we may embrace a whole God.
