The Offspring Of David

The Offspring Of David

I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things in the churches.  I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star.

Revelation 22:16

Christ describes Himself as the Offspring of David.  This refers to His human relation to David because of Mary’s lineage, but it refers to much more than that.  It also refers to Christ’s position as Messiah.  When Christ challenged the religious scholars of Israel, called Pharisees, He asked them, ‘What do you think about the Christ?  Whose Son is He?  They said to Him, The Son of David.  He said to them, How does David by the Spirit call Him Lord?’  The argument that Jesus is making to them is that the Messiah, the Christ, is the Son of David, but also that David recognized Him as His Lord, and His God.  Jesus was leading them to conclusions about Himself at which they did not want to arrive.  He was about to put them in the position of facing the fact that they were rejecting the Greater Son of David, the Messiah, for Whom they had been waiting for centuries.  When Christ describes Himself as ‘the Offspring of David,’ He is reiterating that He is the Creating God and the Redeeming Messiah.  This is the Christ we proclaim.  ‘Neither is there salvation in any other, for there is none other Name under heaven, given among men whereby we must be saved.’  There is no more valuable or exciting message that we can relate.  There is no greater person to whom we can point you.  ‘Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved.’

Our All-Sufficient Savior,
we rejoice that You are David’s Greater Son.
We praise You that all our hopes are in You
and that You never disappoint.
