The Silent Sufferer

He was oppressed and He was afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so He opened not His mouth.
Isaiah 53:7
Christ suffered in silence. One of the most remarkable elements of the sufferings of Christ was His self-control. The Scripture records that He was silent when He was arraigned before the High Priest, then Pilate, then Herod. In the face of such unjust and cruel treatment this is astounding. It is especially so when we consider the power of Christ’s word. By His word He spoke the light into existence. He upholds all things ‘by the word of His power.’ He spoke to the son of the widow of Nain, to Jarius’ daughter, and to Lazarus and raised them from the dead. Throughout His life and ministry we see what He can do simply by speaking. In this instance we see Him silent when a word would have scattered all His enemies. To what purpose was this silence? It was that He would say nothing in His Own defense, and do nothing to diminish the suffering. He would silently allow it to continue to the end, in order that He might accomplish all that was necessary to purchase our redemption. Christ said nothing and thus continued through all adversity to accomplish everything.
Our Glorious Living Savior,
we rejoice at what You endured for us.
We praise You for how You conducted Yourself
through all Your sufferings.
