The Word of God

The Word of God

For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, and do not return there, but water the earth, and make it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall My word be that goes forth from my mouth; it shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.

Isaiah 55:10-11

God’s Word is immensely powerful. By His Word He spoke the world into existence. He upholds all things by the word of His power. As Isaiah is giving one of the most poetically, eloquent gospel appeals in the Scripture, he quotes God regarding the success of His Word. In order to achieve context we have included the previous verse. God compares the success of His word to the effect of the rain and snow upon the earth. As they come down from heaven they have the effect of bringing forth life to, ‘make it bring forth and bud that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater.’ He follows that illustration with, ‘so shall My word be that goes forth from my mouth; it shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.’ What do we conclude from this? We understand that God’s word will accomplish exactly what He intends. What does He intend?  Above many other things, He intends for us to see Christ. Christ’s testimony regarding the Scriptures was, ‘They testify of Me.’ When we have received the word of God it brings us to Christ. The Law is a schoolmaster to bring us to Christ. No matter where we begin in the Scriptures, they bring us to Christ. Therefore, as the word of God goes forth, it accomplishes His will.

Our Wise and Holy God,
we rejoice that You set great store by Your word.
We praise You that as we read it,
You show us Christ.
