Havoc

Havoc

As for Saul, he made havoc of the church, entering every house, and dragging off men and women, committing them to prison. Therefore those wo were scattered went everywhere preaching the word.

Acts 8: 3-4

Saul of Tarsus was the active enemy of Christ and His people.  When Stephen, the first martyr of the New Testament era, died under a hail of stones, Saul was all for it.  He held the coats of the ones who stoned Stephen.  After Stephen’s burial, Saul began the campaign which our text describes. Several thoughts come to mind about this. This shows us how deeply opposed Saul was to Christ and His followers. This fact will become even more pertinent when we consider what happened to Saul in later days. It is also worthwhile to note that by his opposition to believers, he was inadvertently causing the gospel to spread. As he persecuted these followers of Christ they were scattered and went everywhere preaching the word. Thus, God overrules even the worst behavior for His Own glory and for the advancement of the cause of Christ. This is encouraging to those who are suffering persecution for Jesus’ sake. Christ will advance His Kingdom, even by turning the evil intentions of His enemies to His Own glory.

Our Holy and Wise God,
we rejoice that You overrule all things for Your glory.
We praise You that You cause even the wrath of man
to praise You.
