Joint Heirs With Christ

The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs – heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together. 

Romans 8:16 & 17 

What can we expect from God if we are His children? Our text presents a logical inference from the fact that we are His children. If we are God’s children then we are His heirs. We receive from Him all that belongs to Him that He intends us to have for an inheritance. This is integrally related to who we are in Christ. Christ is God’s only-begotten Son. As such, He possesses all that the Father has for Him. He rules, reigns, has all authority, owns, and operates the universe and all within it. He executes the sovereign decrees of God, His Father, by creation and providence. He is King of Kings and Lord of Lords. This becomes important to us when we realize that we, as the children of God are joint heirs with Christ. What is Christ’s as our Head, is ours as His Body. What is Christ’s as our Bridegroom, is ours as His Bride. If He is seated in heavenly places, we are there with Him. If He is King and Priest, He makes us kings and priests. If He reigns, we reign with Him. This is the result of our redemption and our adoption into the family of God. We have a glorious inheritance. 

Our Glorious, Generous God, 
we rejoice in Your Goodness to us. 
We praise You for all You give us in Christ.
