When My Heart Is Overwhelmed

From the end of the earth I will cry to You, when my heart is overwhelmed; lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
Psalm 61:2
We may often find ourselves overwhelmed. Many circumstances can make us feel as if we are at ‘the end of the earth.’ The end of the earth is a desolate place. There is no comfort there. We may be far removed from friends and comforters. When we find ourselves at the end of the earth and overwhelmed, not just at being there, but also at all the things which brought us there, where shall we find hope? David knew the answer to this. His hope was in Christ, the Rock of His salvation. The ancient saints often had more evangelical knowledge than we give them credit for having. Christ indicated that they did when He said, ‘Abraham, saw my day and was glad.’ Also, if David could call Christ his Shepherd, as he did in Psalm 23, and his Lord, as he did in Psalm 110, he could also call Him his Rock in our text. Christ is the Rock to Whom God leads us when our heart is overwhelmed. He is the One Who leads His Bride ‘up from the wilderness, leaning upon her Beloved.’ If you find yourself at the end of the earth, let this be your prayer, lead me to Christ the Rock, Who is Higher than I.
Our Glorious, Living God,
we rejoice that Christ is our Rock.
We praise You that when we are most overwhelmed,
He proves Himself to be our sure foundation.
