How Successful Is God?

All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who come to Me I will by no means cast out.
John 6:37
How successful is God in redemption? Christ answers that question quite thoroughly in the chapter from which our text derives. Our text is the short answer. Christ says, ‘All that the Father gives Me will come to Me.’ He goes on to say, ‘the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out.’ Later on in the chapter He will articulate how much the Father and the Holy Spirit contribute to the work of salvation. He declares, ‘No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day.’ So the Father gives to Christ a people and He must draw them to Christ or they cannot be saved. After that He speaks of the work of the Holy Spirit by saying, ‘It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.’ Thus all three members of the Trinity contribute to the whole work of redemption. Our text indicates how successful God is in this work of salvation. He succeeds completely. This is why it is important for us to take a large view of His work of redemption. He saves ‘a great multitude which no one could number of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues….’ Christ said, ‘I will build my church’ and in redeeming all these people, He most certainly does.
Our Great and Gracious God,
we rejoice in Your salvation.
We praise You that it is a wide work,
in which You completely succeed.
