Forever

Forever

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

Psalm 23:6

This world is not our home. We confess we are strangers and pilgrims in it. We follow Christ, Our Shepherd, through it. He has gone before us and, even now, sits at the right hand of His Father’s throne until He makes His enemies His footstool. According to Paul we are already seated with Christ in heavenly places. In Revelation, John describes the situation of the redeemed, ‘and I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.’ This is where David dwells now. He has arrived at the house of God. He will dwell there forever. David is a representative of the redeemed. Christ was his Shepherd from the early days of his life. He made him to lie down in green pastures. He led him beside the still waters. He restored his soul. He led him in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. He was with him in the valley of the shadow of death. He comforted him with His rod and staff. He prepared a table before him in the presence of his enemies. He anointed his head with oil. He provided for him abundantly. His goodness and mercy followed him all the days of his life. Now, he lives in the house of God…forever. David is where we are going. He is in the very presence of Christ his Shepherd. David’s today is our tomorrow. Like him we shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Glorious, Living God,
we rejoice that You have prepared great things for us.
We praise You that the day is coming,
when the faith shall be sight.
