The Day Of Pentecost

The Day Of Pentecost

When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them.

Acts 2:1-3

History has its’ watershed moments. The Day of Pentecost is one of those. Christ had foretold the events of the day by saying, ‘But you shall receive power when the Holy Ghost has come upon you.’ The Holy Ghost did come upon them and proceeded to use them in remarkable ways. He gave them the boldness to preach Christ plainly, and the ability to do it in recognizable foreign languages which they had not acquired by study. That this is the type of tongues they spoke is clear from the response of the audience, ‘Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, look, are not all these who speak Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born?’  The next section of the passage catalogues the languages the Apostles spoke. Peter stood up, as the chief speaker and preached Christ to the multitude. The result was that 3,000 people were saved. This was a watershed moment in history. The people who were there on the day would take the story of it throughout the ancient world. They would become the forerunners for the Apostles, as well as be witnesses themselves of the truth of the gospel. Thus, God did what was necessary to kick start the evangelization of the world before Jesus returns. We are still experiencing the effects of the Day of Pentecost. We are still preaching Christ to all who will hear. What began in then will have its’ effect to the day when Christ returns. What the Holy Spirit began, He will complete.

Our Wise and Good God,
we rejoice that You have ordained whatsoever comes to pass.
We praise You that in the course of history,
You determined that Christ should be preached.
