Glory In Tribulations

And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
Romans 5: 3-5
What are we to make of the various hardships we will inevitably endure? Paul has begun by pointing out that being justified we have peace with God through Christ. He has hit the high notes of our access by faith, the grace wherein we stand, and our rejoicing in the hope of the glory of God. Now he takes one further step by saying we actually glory in suffering. His rationale is hardships produce endurance, endurance produces character, and character produces hope that does not disappoint. Thus justification is the gateway to spiritual growth and development. Because we are justified and have peace with God we do not endure hardship in the hopes that our suffering will make us more acceptable to God. Because of Christ, Who was raised for our justification, God already accepts us. Therefore whatever hardships we endure, which develop us spiritually, are valuable in conforming us to the image of Christ. They serve as the sanding stones and abrasive wheels that remove from us all that does not resemble Christ. While they are difficult to experience, we can glory in them because they have purpose and value. The end result of the work of sanctification is Christlikeness. These experiences aid and abet that process. Thus we glory in them.
Our Glorious, Sovereign God,
we rejoice that You foreordained whatsoever comes to pass.
We praise You that even our tribulations
have a good purpose in Your overall plan.
