Peace With God

Peace With God

Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Romans 5:1

Justification by faith brings us into the position of having peace with God. We want to draw a distinction between having peace with God and having the peace of God in our heart. Peace with God means we are no longer His enemies. We are no longer at war against Him. We are rather at peace with Him and the barrier or wall that stood between us He has broken down by Christ and His work. Christ is the Mediator Who has brought us into a relationship of peace with God. The peace of God is an internal Spiritual experience that is part of the fruit of the Spirit. It is the result of the sanctifying work of grace which the Spirit does in us. Therefore, because we have peace with God the peace of God follows as a fruit developed by the Spirit. Paul is not discussing the peace of God in this text. He is continuing to build his case for justification by faith. That leads him to make the categorical statement that is our text. When God has justified us by imputing to us the righteousness of Christ, He regards us as having peace with Him. We are no longer under His wrath or liable to receive His judgment against sin. He has poured out His wrath on Christ. Christ has made peace with God for us.

Our Wise and Sovereign God,
we rejoice at the way in which You
have brought us to have peace with You.
We praise You that Christ is our peacemaker.
