According To His Will

According To His Will

Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

Romans 8:26-27

The Holy Spirit intercedes successfully for us. One of the most significant aspects of His intercession is that He pleads ‘according to the will of God.’ All the members of the Trinity are at one. One member does not think or act at variance from the other. There is no debate or difference of opinion among them. Therefore, God the Father, Who ‘searches the hearts, knows what the mind of the Spirit is.’ The Spirit intercedes for us ‘with groanings which cannot be uttered,’ and that ‘according to the will of God.’ Thus, His intercession must succeed in every way. What is even more wonderful is that all prayers prayed in the will of God must, of necessity, contribute to the overall end of bringing us to resemble Christ more closely. Whatever lesser goal it may accomplish, the overarching end must remain, that of renewing us in our whole person after the image of Christ. God the Father has this overarching end for us. The Holy Spirit is the One Who practically effects it. When He intercedes for us according to the will of God, He is moving us toward Christlikeness. The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are all for that. We can pray confidently that the Holy Spirit will intercede for us according to God’s will.

Our Merciful God and Savior,
we rejoice at the work of Your Holy Spirit.
We praise You that He successfully intercedes for us,
according to Your will.
