Led By The Spirit

Led By The Spirit

Therefore, brethren, we are debtors—not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.

Romans 8:12-14

How shall we walk spiritually every day? We have the Scriptures. Within them we have the law, the illustrative narratives and all the exhortations. We are also still living in the world and our natural inclinations are still very much a part of life. We feel deeply the ‘burden of this body of death’, from which we would very much like to be delivered. We know the Holy Spirit lives within us. The fact that we make some decisions that are good and right is evidence of His leadership. That we are led by the Spirit of God is an indicator that we are the children of God. This means we know what we read in the Scriptures teaches us right from wrong, good from evil, what to embrace and what to shun. The Holy Spirit takes those things as they characterize Christ and shows them to us. He points us to Christ consistently. As we see Christ, the Holy Spirit leads us to imitate Him. As we imitate Him we grow more thoroughly to resemble Him. This means our everyday walk becomes less and less characterized by a catering to our flesh and more and more like one the Spirit is directing. We may grow frustrated that the pace of our spiritual progress is as slow as it is, but it is occurring at the rate which God has determined. He will bring us along in due time.

Our Good and Gracious God,
we rejoice at the work of Your Holy Spirit.
We praise You that He leads us,
by taking the things of Christ and showing them to us.
