Work Together

And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.
Romans 8:28
Who is running the show? We live in a world that, at times, seems to be in total chaos. Events occur in what appears to be a random fashion. We are at a loss to explain how they relate to one another or to any scheme as a whole. Certain philosophies have arrived at the conclusion that there is no large narrative, no sense to any of it, and no good conclusion. This leads to a desperate, nihilistic view of life. Our text stands out in contrast to this most depressing of cosmologies. It is, admittedly, a text for people of faith. The promise is that all things, however incomprehensible, work together for the good of those whom God has redeemed by Christ. The rest of the passage has quite a lot to say about the strength of God’s love for His people and the fact that Christ’s love is something from which nothing and no one can separate us. Because we are inseparably united with Christ all things do work together for our good. It is important for us to receive this truth in the face of all we may endure in life. Without the knowledge that God is coordinating all things together for our good, we would be at a loss to even countenance those things or embrace them in any way. He is the Great Conductor of the orchestra of human events. He still holds the baton and will not drop it.
Our Glorious, Sovereign God,
we rejoice that You are orchestrating all things.
We praise You they are for our good in every detail.
