Who Makes Intercession

Who Makes Intercession

Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.

Romans 8:33-34

Our freedom from condemnation rests wholly upon the Person and work of Christ. Paul has referred to those who accuse believers. Without his having identified them specifically, we are aware from the Scriptures that the world, our own conscience, and the devil are all ready accusers. Why do they not succeed? The answer lies in the second portion of our text. Christ has died and paid the penalty the law exacts for sin. Christ has risen and overcome death which is the wages of sin. Christ is at the right hand of God presenting the great objective plea of His blood. Christ ever lives to make intercession for us. Therefore, our accusers are foiled on every front. They may hate us, but they cannot have us. They may deride us, but they cannot defeat us. They may oppose us, but they cannot overcome us. Christ has done all that is necessary to guarantee our security. We rest on Him, Our Shield and our Defender. This is immeasurably heartening. We stand upon His merits. We occupy redemption ground. All Paul has written thus far has led us to this blessed assurance. Therefore, it is most appropriate for us to make much of Christ. He has done all. We have received all from the hands of God for Jesus’ sake. To God be the glory, great things He has done.

Our Gracious Master and our God,
we rejoice that You ever live to make intercession for us.
We praise You that because of Your merits,
You can never fail.
