Foolishness

But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
I Corinthians 2:14
There is a vast difference between what we can know naturally and what we can know spiritually. God created humanity in His image. Because He did, we have remarkable natural abilities. We are body, soul, and spirit. We have a life which involves that which is physical, mental, spiritual, and social. God has bestowed upon us gifts that we employ to invent, engineer, and maintain. We have the ability to comprehend many things. What we cannot do, apart from God, is understand the things of the Spirit of God. In fact, apart from the work of the Spirit to reveal spiritual truth to us, we regard those things as foolishness. Thus, a person may be talented, intelligent, astute, well-educated, charming, and personable yet be devoid of any real understanding of the things of the Spirit of God. This is a perilous circumstance. Apart from understanding spiritual truth, we will not embrace Christ. We will not believe He is the way, the truth, and the life. We will regard Him as a good man, a great moral teacher, and a fine example of humanity. But apart from the Holy Spirit, we will regard the things of Christ as foolishness. Therefore, let us appeal to God to show us the truth of Christ by His Spirit.
Great God of Wonders,
we rejoice at the abundance of good things You have given us.
We praise You for the gift of spiritual understanding.
