At All Times

At All Times

Trust in Him at all times, you people; Pour out your heart before Him. God is a refuge for us.

Psalm 62:8

When is it a good time to trust God? David’s life had many seasons, and within those seasons he had a wide variety of experiences. He was a shepherd, a courtier, a soldier, a fugitive, a mercenary, a king, an adulterer, and an abject penitent. He fought lions, bears, giants, and foes both foreign and domestic. He succeeded wonderfully and failed miserably. Throughout his successes and his failures, he trusted God, more specifically he trusted Christ, his Shepherd. The psalm from which our text derives refers to his enemies. He speaks plainly of those who attack him. Because they posed real threats to him, he was in genuine danger, in human terms, of imminent death and destruction. Our text is an exhortation for people in desperate straits. David counsels, ‘Trust in Him at all times, you people.’ When all seems against us, Jesus never fails. We may trust Him in good times and in evil times. We may trust Him when everything seems for us and when all seems against us. We may pour out our hearts to Him knowing He hears us. He is our defense when we are otherwise defenseless. Christ has ever been the refuge of His people. What He was for David, He is for us. Today is one of the ‘all times’ in which we may trust in Him.

O God, our Shield and Defender,
we rejoice that You are our ever-present refuge.
We praise You that we may
trust in You at all times.
