Believing His Word

Believing His Word

The royal official said, Sir, come down before my child dies. Go, Jesus replied, your son will live. The man took Jesus at his word and departed.

John 4:49-50

Do we believe Christ’s words? Our text lies at the heart of a brief account of a nobleman who sought Him out because his son was desperately ill. He besought Christ to come to where the child was and heal him. Instead of following the man, as He often did, Christ said, ‘Go your way; your son lives.’ Instead of insisting that Christ come down, the man believed His word and returned to his house. On his way, he encountered his servants who told him his son had recovered. He asked when, and they responded with the timeframe in which Christ had pronounced him healed. This man had acted upon the bare word of Christ. He found that Christ was as good as His word. We will find Him to be as good as His word also. What has He said? He has said, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life; I am the resurrection and the life; I am the good Shepherd; I am the door; I am the Alpha and Omega; the First and the Last; the Beginning and the End.’ He has said much more and we believe His word. We live upon the bare word of God. We have staked our lives upon His promises. We are certain of our eternal future because Jesus never fails. Our lives are the outgrowth of Christ and His message. We stake all our claims upon His unimpeachable character.

Our Holy and Righteous God,
we rejoice at the truth that You have told us.
We praise You that it leads us to eternal life.
