He Knocks

I sleep, but my heart is awake; It is the voice of my beloved! He knocks, saying, Open for me, my sister, my love, my dove, my perfect one; For my head is covered with dew, my locks with the drops of the night.

Song Of Solomon 5:2

Christ desires fellowship with us. Our text refers to His desire. The Bride is speaking of an incident which has occurred in the night. Her Beloved has arrived at her door, knocked, and expressed His desire that she open the door for Him. In time, she does. For our purpose we want to consider the glorious prospect that Christ seeks us out with the intention of having fellowship with us. There is a passage in Revelation which articulates this specifically. In Revelation we read, ‘Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come into him and dine with him, and he with Me.’ Christ speaks quite explicitly regarding His desire to have fellowship with us. People use this text in an evangelistic sense to urge the unsaved to open the door of their heart to Christ. If we look at the verse in context, it refers to those who are already saved. This is not an evangelistic invitation. Rather, Christ is appealing to those who are His to open the door that He might have even closer, more intimate communion with  us. Christ desires to be with us. As the Holy Spirit takes the things of Christ and shows them to us, our heart responds to Him. We desire more of Christ. We long for deeper, closer, sweeter communion. We open the door.

Our Gracious Master and our God,
we rejoice in Your desire for us.
We praise You that You seek us out
for fellowship and communion.
