Honoring The Son

For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son, that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.

John 5:22-23

We cannot honor God without honoring Christ. This is not simply a matter of opinion. This is a conclusion based upon the words of Christ Himself. The Jewish religionists made much of God. They constantly referred to Him. They repeated His words, expounded His laws and loudly prayed to Him. They considered themselves especially favored by Him. Under no circumstances were they prepared to countenance an upstart construction worker turned itinerant preacher no matter how many miracles He did. They were absolutely opposed to the idea that He was, as He claimed, the Son of God, thus making Himself equal with God. Christ was unambiguous as to His relationship with God, Whom He called His Father. In our text, He makes a bold, definitive statement. He declares that He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him. This statement effectively annuls the religion of anyone who claims to be honoring God, while refusing to honor Christ. Admittedly, this is a hard saying. Yet, as hard as it is, it rests firmly upon the clear statement of Christ Himself. We are not asserting anything He does not certify. Hence to be true to His statement, we make much of Christ. He is the One Whom the Father has sent. As we honor Him, we honor the Father.

Our Holy and Wise God,
we rejoice at how You have revealed Yourself to us.
We praise You that all Your revelations
lead us to Christ.
