To Number Our Days

To Number Our Days

So, teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

Psalm 90:12

Our days are numbered. If God has ordered all things according to the counsel of His Own will, that includes the length of our life. Moses, who wrote the 90th Psalm says, ‘The days of our lives are seventy years; and if by reason of strength, they are eighty years, yet their boast is only labor and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.’ In his day, seventy to eighty years was the norm. When he appeals to God in our text, he is essentially petitioning Him to teach us to make wise use of our time in light of the fact that our days are numbered. He sees the importance of gaining a heart of wisdom. It is possible to fritter our time away on pursuits that have no real value. If we are to seek to gain a heart of wisdom, we must begin and continue with Christ. He is the embodiment of the wisdom of God. He is the place where we will find wisdom in all its fullness. Everything He has done, is doing, and will do exudes wisdom. We look to Him as Savior and then as the Grand Template for the wise life. True spirituality consists of viewing things from His perspective. Therefore, we spend time in the contemplation of Christ. That leads us to the imitation of Him. This is the most worthwhile pursuit. By this, we gain a heart of wisdom throughout the days we have. Thus, we learn to number our days.

Our Holy and Wise God,
we rejoice that You rule over all of our affairs.
We praise You that You are able to give us wisdom
for all our days.
