Where Is He?

Where Is He?

Where has your beloved gone, O fairest among women? Where has your beloved turned aside, that we may seek him with you?

Song of Solomon 6:1

Our occupation with Christ has an effect on other people. Our text is one of the few speeches in the Song of Solomon by the daughters of Jerusalem. They had previously asked, ‘What is your beloved more than another beloved?’ In between that question and this one lies the Brides’ detailed description of the beauty of her Beloved. It is a highly poetic, graphic word portrait. At the end of it, the daughters of Jerusalem ask as to his whereabouts. Her description of him and her obvious attraction to him has aroused their interest. This is consistent with what we find elsewhere in Scripture. The disciples are one example. They began to follow Christ, saw His miracles, heard His words, became convinced of His identity as the Son of God, saw Him die, and witnessed His resurrection from the dead. They spent the rest of their lives proclaiming Christ personally and publicly. He was their preeminent subject. The result of that was a host of new believers. They responded to the message and became preoccupied with Christ and with seeking Him. When we find in Christ our all in all, it cannot fail to affect others who begin to seek Him as well. The whole effect is the result of Christ being preeminent. He matters more than anyone else.

Our Gracious and Loving Savior,
we rejoice at the beauty of Your Person.
We praise You that a great multitude will seek You.
