I Am The Door

I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.
John 10:9
Christ had a habit of making statements that coming from anyone else would be outrageous. Our text contains one of them. He says, without qualification, ‘I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved….’ Given the predispositions of the Pharisees, it is little wonder they became enraged when they heard this and other statements like it. Without the works to support His claims, Christ would be a fraud. What makes this statement resonate is what goes with it. All His miracles, works, and words combine together to prove the legitimacy of His claims. To deny Him is to simply refuse to accept the evidence. As Christ uses the metaphor, He is referring to salvation and adds sustenance to it. He says the person who embraces Him, ‘will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.’ Thus, He is the door not just to salvation, but to our total well-being. This reminds us of all David describes in the 23rd Psalm regarding his relationship with Jehovah, Who is his shepherd. His introductory statement is, ‘I shall not want,’ or lack. Thus, he articulates that Christ meets all his needs in time and for eternity. This is what Christ was claiming for Himself when He said, ‘I am the door.’ We believe Him and have walked through that open door.
O Great Shepherd of the Sheep,
we rejoice that You are indeed the door.
We praise You that by You we have salvation.
