Then They Remembered

Fear not, daughter of Zion; Behold, your King is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt. His disciples did not understand these things at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about Him and that they had done these things to Him.
John 12:15-16
Christ came to seek and to save that which was lost. Part of the whole purpose of His mission was to demonstrably fulfill the ancient prophecies about the Messiah thus proving He is indeed the Christ, the Son of God. Our text narrates one of those fulfillments. That relates to His entering Jerusalem riding upon a donkey’s colt. Zechariah had prophesied this centuries before. What is useful for our purpose is the understanding of the disciples. Like us, the truth dawned upon them slowly at times. In this case, Christ entered Jerusalem meek and lowly, riding upon this colt and they did not immediately realize the significance of it. It was not till later that they remembered that these things were written about Him. We are often like them. We have heard the words of prophecy. We have studied the events the Scripture outlines for us regarding God’s agenda, especially as it respects Christ. We believe what the Scripture says although various particulars are not always uppermost in our thinking. Thus, when certain events occur, we miss the significance of them until much later. The confidence we have is that eventually we will understand all things about the Person and work of Christ. He will see to it that in due course of time, we understand all things.
Our Gracious Master and our God,
we rejoice that You have proven Yourself in every way.
We praise that what the prophets witnessed about You,
has come true.
