The LORD Thinks Upon Me

But I am poor and needy; yet the LORD thinks upon me. You are my help and my deliverer; do not delay, O my God.
Psalm 40:17
What is our hope when we are poor and needy? David’s hope was, ‘the LORD thinks upon me.’ Often we may feel when we are poor and needy that we are unseen, unheard and ignored. We may feel this keenly in our social connections at our work, or in general. Our conclusion may be, ‘no one sees me, hears me, or cares about me.’ It may seem to us that no one even thinks about us. When such feelings set in they are hard to expel or erase. David experienced the isolation of these feelings. He counted himself to be poor and needy. His hope in that dark place was, ‘the LORD thinks upon me.’ David’s hope is our hope. From the rest of Scripture we know that Christ has His people perpetually on His heart. He ever lives to make intercession for us. He is our Head and we are so united to Him that He can never not think of us. The book of the Song of Solomon is full of the evidence of the passion Christ, the Bridegroom has for His people, the Bride. Therefore when we do find ourselves poor and needy, He is our Hope. He does think upon us. He has graven us upon the palms of His hands and can never forget us. This is an abundant consolation and encouragement to us when we would otherwise be isolated by thoughts of being unseen and unheard. Christ is for us.
Our Gracious Master and our God,
we rejoice that You think upon us.
We praise You that You have us forever on Your heart.
