Upon A Rock

Upon A Rock

I waited patiently for the LORD; and He inclined to me, and heard my cry. He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my steps. He has put a new song in my mouth, praise to our God; many will see it and fear, and will trust in the LORD.

Psalm 40:1-3

Christ is the Rock of His redeemed. David testifies of his experience of salvation in the passage before us. He specifically says that God has set his feet upon a rock. We find other occasions when David and others refer to the rock. In Psalm 61 he says, ‘From the end of the earth I will cry to You, when my heart is overwhelmed; lead me to the rock that is higher than I.’ Therefore when we see David’s reference in our text it brings us to consider Christ as David’s foundation and ours. When God brings us up from the pit in which we have been, He sets our feet upon Christ, the Rock of our salvation. He is the sure foundation of our faith. He is the Chief Cornerstone of the church, which is all the redeemed of all ages. He is the rock upon which we may safely build our life as opposed to the shifting sands upon which, if we build, we guarantee misery and failure. In all the hardships, trials, and adversities of David’s life experience Christ was the rock upon Whom he depended as his sure foundation. Christ is our Rock and our sure foundation. When all around our soul gives way, He then is all our hope and stay. On Christ the Solid Rock we stand.

Great God of wonders,
we rejoice that You never change.
We praise You that in all our changing seasons of life,
You will hold us up.
