Walking In The Light

If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.
I John 1:6-7
What is the difference between walking in darkness and walking in the light? In John 8:12 which we have been considering lately, Christ says, ‘I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.’ John takes up the subject of walking in darkness in his first epistle. We must understand it in order to be able to articulate it. He states in the first portion of the text that a person can claim to have fellowship with God and yet ‘walk in darkness’ thus living a lie. By contrast, he says we can, ‘walk in the light as He is in the light.’ How is God, in the light? He is in the light by virtue of His character. He shows us His character by showing us Christ, and His redemptive work. To walk in the light as He is in the light is to live in the knowledge of Christ and of His work, with the accompanying wisdom it brings. This is what elevates our souls to be renewed in our whole person after the image of God. It is what the Holy Spirit is actively doing in us. It is what steers us away from darkness and the works of darkness. To walk in the light is to follow Him and gives us fellowship with Him. We also enjoy the daily cleansing of the blood of Christ. These are the results of walking in the light.
Our Good and Gracious God,
we rejoice that You continue to reveal Christ to us.
We praise You that Your Holy Spirit,
leads us out of darkness, into light.
