Abundance

Abundance

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over.

Psalm 23:5

Christ our Shepherd does more than preserve us. He causes us to live abundantly. Everything David has articulated thus far has detailed the positive effect of Christ’s leadership. True leadership is not about being the best, but about making everyone else better. Christ sees to it that His sheep have more than the bare minimum. As David put it, ‘You anoint my head with oil, my cup runs over.’ When Christ turned water into wine, He made an abundance of it. When He fed the 5,000, there was food left over. When He showed Himself alive from the dead, it was not just on one occasion to a few people, but on many occasions to a considerable number of people. Christ does more for us than to ensure we merely survive. He provides for us abundantly. He anoints our head with oil in preparation for the eternal feast. He pours out His goodness upon us until our cup runs over. He is not a meagre Christ. His is a Christ of abundance. What He gives us lasts for eternity. We have every reason to look to Him, our Good Shepherd for an abundance of good things. Therefore, we make much of Christ. He does exceeding abundantly above all we ask or think.

Our Glorious, Living God
we rejoice at Your abundant provision.
We praise You that having given us Christ,
You give us all things.
