Christ Alone In Heaven and Earth

Christ Alone In Heaven and Earth

Whom have I in heaven but You? And there is none upon earth that I desire besides You.

Psalm 73:25

‘I only have eyes for you,’ are the words of an old song.  They summarize our text for this morning. The Psalmist was struggling greatly. He saw the prosperity of the wicked and fretted over the seeming unfairness of it all. Eventually, when he saw how they would fall under the judgment and wrath of God, he came good in his thinking. As he worships his God, ‘in spirit and in truth,’ he utters the words of our text today; ‘Whom have I in heaven but You? There is none upon the earth that I desire besides You.’ Put in Christological terms, the Church, the Bride of Christ, has eyes for Christ Alone, in heaven and earth. In the morning, when I arise, show me Christ in the Scriptures. On line after line, and page after page, let me behold the Root and the Offspring of David, and the Bright and Morning Star. When I come to the place of prayer, show me Christ. Let our communion be sweet. Let me inhale the Perfume of the Rose of Sharon, and the Lily of the Valley. When I go about my daily duties, show me Christ. Let me see Him going before me, and leading me in the way of His steps.  When I arrive at the end of my earthly journey, let Him hold my head and hand and bear me up into His everlasting dwelling. Fill all my sight, for all eternity, with Christ for, ‘so shall we ever be with the Lord.’  Yes, for us, it is Christ, Christ Alone, for time and for eternity.

O Living, Loving Savior,
all our love is toward You,
and our desire is for You, alone.
