My God And Your God

My God And Your God

Jesus said to her,  ‘Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.’

John 20:17

Because Christ is God, how is it that God is, His God?  In speaking with Mary Magdalene after His resurrection, Christ says that He will be ascending to, ‘My Father and your Father, and to my God and your God.’  The implication is that God (the Father) is Christ’s God.  How should we understand this?  If Christ is God, then as God, He is ‘the same in substance, equal in power and glory,’ with the Father.  As one who is also truly human, Christ articulates that God the Father is ‘above all,’ as Ephesians 4:6 puts it.  Therefore, there is no inconsistency in Christ’s saying that God is His God.  This also supports the concept that for the purposes of carrying out the Divine decree, each of the Members of the Trinity adopts particular positions to execute this decree in the works of creation and providence.  Christ is entirely consistent to say that God is, ‘my Father’ and also, ‘my God.’  We embrace Christ, and in doing so, embrace the Father and the Spirit as the other Members of the Trinity.  We embrace not only a whole God, but also a whole Bible, which presents this one God as three Persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Our Good and Wise God,
we rejoice that You exist as the Holy Trinity.
We praise You that as we come to know You,

we see the manifestations of all Your Glory
as You present Yourself, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
