Surely…Soon

Surely…Soon

He who testifies to these things says, ‘Surely I am coming soon.’

Revelation 22:20

Christ speaks plainly about His future plans.  Our text is His concluding statement in the canon of Scripture.  He makes one simple point, ‘Surely, I am coming soon.’  Our perceptions of time are very different from God’s.  We look at this remark and perhaps think, ‘He said that more than two thousand years ago.’  To us, that is a long time.  We are not always able to see events from God’s perspective.  Elsewhere the Scripture explains that to God ‘a day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as a day.’  Because God is eternal, He is above time.  Therefore, to put it in perspective, Christ has only been gone for a couple of days.  When He closes His revelation with the promise ‘I am coming soon,’ He means soon from His perspective.  This brings us to consider how much we do not know about His schedule.  What we do know is that according to His word, both here and elsewhere, He will return, and quite without warning.  This lends an urgency to what we do.  We do not know how much time we have remaining to advance the kingdom of God and to make much of Christ.  Whatever time we do have we should use wisely.  Therefore, we point you to Christ, Who will surely come soon.

Our Gracious Master and Our God,
we look forward to the day when You will return
in all Your glory
.
We praise You that today, we have the privilege
to make You known.
